Biosphere2

Biosphere 2
From 1991-1993, the now world-famous Biosphere 2 launched an unprecedented experiment—to house eight humans in a totally sealed, self-contained ecosystem in which all air, food, and water was contained within. A great deal was learned from this experiment, about microbes, the complexity of ecosystems, human behavior, and the complexity of living outside of the massive, original biosphere we call home.

Biosphere 2 now serves as a unique, large-scale experimental apparatus housing seven model ecosystems with active research by teams of multidisciplinary scientists. [website | Wikipedia]

SIRIUS 18/19
Scientific International Research In Unique terrestrial Station (SIRIUS) is a 120-day isolation experiment that reproduces the main characteristics of a real space flight to the Moon, including the following stages: flight to a satellite, followed by a flight to find the landing site, landing of four crew members for surface operations, staying in the Moon’s orbit and remote control of the lunar rover for base preparation, and return to Earth. It is a fully sealed environment that incorporates atmosphere recycling. A prior 2017 experiment was conducted, with runs for 2020-21 planned. [website | research]

Lunar Palace I
A 105-day, multicrew, closed integrative bioregenerative life support systems experiment in Lunar Palace 1 was carried out from February through May 2014. The results show that environmental conditions as well as the gas balance between O2 and CO2 in the system were well maintained during the 105-day experiment. [Space.com | Wikipedia]

ESA MELiSSA
The driving element of MELiSSA is the recovering of food, water and oxygen from organic waste carbon dioxide and minerals, using light as source of energy to promote biological photosynthesis. It is an assembly of processes (mechanical grinding, bioreactors, filtration, wet oxidation, etc.) aiming at a total conversion of the organic wastes and CO2 to oxygen, water and food. [website]

HERA
Located at the NASA Johnson Space Center, HERA is a unique three-story habitat designed to serve as an analog for isolation, confinement, and remote conditions in exploration scenarios. [website]

NEEMO
NASA’s NEEMO brings astronauts, engineers, and scientists into Aquarius, the world’s only undersea research station, for up to three weeks at a time. The Aquarius habitat and its surroundings provide a convincing analog for space exploration. Here equipment, tools, and techniques are tested in challenging conditions. [website]

LSSIF
NASA’s Life Support Systems Integration Facility (LSSIF) provides a platform to design and evaluate advanced manned space systems at NASA Johnson Space Center. In the mid 1990s, the LSSIF Early Human Testing Initiative integrated several subsystems to enable human occupancy of the 6 meter chamber for a 90 day closed volume test. This test facility remains operational today. [a resource | a search …]

BioHome
BioHome was a small facility created by NASA in the late 1980s that could support one person in a fully functional habitat. [Wikipedia]

Bios-3
A Russian closed ecosystem research center, construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1972. By 1968, system efficiency had reached 99% by recycling the air, 85% by recycling water and about 50% by recycling food and nutrients. [website]
